The Regalia Clan

Power is their right

The most powerful family in all of the Realms by a stark margin, The Regalia Clan, much like the other Pillar families, grew in prominence at the end and after the War of Being. They used their Soul Rights to dominate the other families, and grew to be the wealthiest, mightiest family amongst even the Pillars. Despite each Pillar having a function, from the Leonas being the healers, to the Lostons being the seers- the Regalias’ function is nothing else beside overwhelming force, and because of this, they are known to have Soul Rights that can do the jobs of all other families.

But just what is this power known as the Regalia Soul Right? This power is described in the novel as every individual Regalia’s right to power- their unique assertion of dominance over a specific part of reality. As such, it is not magic, rather, it’s similar to a muscle or a bodily function they just have. Every Regalia has a different Soul Right, and because of this, half the battle when fighting one is figuring out what it is, and overcoming it.

Despite how oppressive this power seems- every Regalia has two weaknesses. Although comical, their pride makes for spontaneity next to impossible. Every Regalia under the influence of Tyrannus has no answer to unforeseen variables, if they lose control of a situation that’s it- they lose control. This makes them incredibly detailed oriented, and for the most part extremely efficient tacticians. Their hubris is a significant detriment in all regards- including socially. Almost every Regalia in the current era sees themself as superior to other Royals, so they do things differently to set them apart from the norm. This leads to some quirks in the family- the major one being their own language. The Regalias believe they are so much more than their peers that they feel it necessary to detach themselves on a verbal level as well.

The second major flaw of The Regalia Clan is inherent in the power they wield. Every Soul Right- it doesn’t matter how divine the power seems, has a draw back. This is seen in the case of Latros Regalia during his fight with Arkus Staffort and Bastion; throughout the fight his body increased in size, increasing his internal body temperature- affecting wind currents around him. The downside of this power is that the bigger he grew, the slower he moved- yet the shockwave he could produce remained.

This is one example of the weaknesses seen in the Soul Rights- another prominent one being seen in Umbra Regalia. Umbra’s power grants him dominion over shadows and darkness- allowing him to manipulate darkness to his will. The downside of this though is that Umbra is only able to attack or defend with this ability at any given time. This makes it so battles against large groups of enemies are somewhat difficult. This is a glaring weakness that was recognized by his sister, Diana, early in his training- and has since been compensated for by extensive training in magic combat.

A final example of this can be seen in the man himself- Tyrannus Regalia. Tyrannus has a Soul Right that allows for him to copy other Regalias’ powers and add them to his own arsenal. This effectively makes him on par with the entirety of the clan, and thus makes him one of the most dangerous men in the 8 realms. This power has a few drawbacks however, the biggest one being that he can only use one Soul Right at a time. This limits his ability on a tactical level, as he needs to think about which powers he needs for a fight so he can adeptly switch between them. Secondly, in order for Tyrannus to be able to use a power he steals, he needs to first understand how it works, and how it impacts reality- as all Soul Rights do. This makes for the stealing of powers to be less immediate and more in depth. He physically cannot use a power he doesn’t understand; yet this also means that Tyrannus is one of the most informed characters in the story- understanding concepts of physics and biology on a more than proficient level. Lastly, the final downside of his power is that every time he switches Soul Rights, not only does he need to deactivate his power, but it takes him longer to use a different power. This means that in a battle with Tyrannus, it becomes less about imposing force- which is more or less a lost cause- and more about how long you can last against him. Chances are that if it’s long enough, he won’t be able to use his Soul Right at all.

The Regalia Clan used to be respected for their benevolence and pride of their zeal, using the powers given to them by The Founder to carry out his will without question. But upon the disappearance of Maximillian Regalia, and the ascension of his son Tyrannus, the family became isolationist. Shirking their duty to the realms and The Founder, they stayed in their ancestral home- Thal’Vhaeren, a keep in the city of Elacina of Purgatory. From here, the Regalias became obsessed with power, and nurturing that power. They participated in an act frowned upon by the other Pillars known as “Pruning” in which they eugenically killed off those of their family they felt weren’t strong enough to thrive in their new world order. This change caused the Regalias to fall from grace; turning from a respected family to a feared pack of wolves.
